Privacy and Security in Facebook and Snap chat The uprising of Web 2.0 has contributed to a significant rise in the number of technologies designed to enable the dissemination of user-generated content. SnapChat, Facebook, any number of blogging tools—can be referred to under a number of different labels, but the generally accepted term is â€Å"social media†. While in 2016 they are anything but new, social media continues to gain prominence to the point where they are a somewhat ubiquitous presence in contemporary society. As platforms designed to ingest high volumes of personal information, there are considerable privacy and security concerns associated with these services. Social media platforms are very broad but here, my discussion will focus mainly on Facebook and Snap chat. Everyday †¢ Over 100,000 tweets are sent †¢ 690,000 pieces of content posted on Facebook †¢ 2 million searches are made on Google †¢ Up to 48 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube †¢ 47,000 application software downloaded from the App Store †¢ 4,000 photos are shared on Instagram †¢ Over 580 websites are launched †¢ Around $272,000 is spent by people online (thesocialskinny.com). Continuous exposure of personal details on the Facebook and Snapchat is a means by which identity thieves, scam artists, terrorists, and stalkers utilize the information that people make available themselves (Kadri-Liis Piirsalu.2012).
